Rally Raid BMW Engine Management System

After many years of development Rally Raid UK is pleased to offer a system designed by people who build and race cars in Rallye-Raid events, using all their knowledge about the conditions and what is useful to the crew and mechanics.

Things that are important to anyone competing in Rallye-Raids are weight, size, convenience and ease of use. We have selected the Windows Smartphone system which is incorporated into the Orange E200 SPV. The advantages are that it is small, light and very robust, also everyone carries a phone so it does not double up on items to carry or remember. The capabilities of this system are enormous.

The control unit is capable of reading the VIN, mileage, and year of manufacture from the ECU, plus all other software and vehicle build information. This proves useful for identifying the ECU you have in stock and extremely useful when you are purchasing engines second hand. Simply read the data from the crashed car and verify the mileage and date of the engine before purchase.

Using a cheap separate harness and power supply the ECU can be analysed without the car. which means if you are purchasing a second hand ECU it can be tested before purchase very simply and quickly.

Reading of the DTCs (digital trouble codes) stored in the KAM (keep alive memory) allows all the trouble codes stored in the ECU to be viewed in real time. In addition the display of the three 'snap-shots' of when the DTC occurred are displayed in an easily understood format. This helps mechanics find what the engine was doing when a fault occurred. This is a great help in solving faults that are intermittent.

The system offers a filtering system so it can ignore faults that are not needed. For example, there is no point in being warned about air-condition faults if you don't have any air-conditioning fitted to your rally car.

For every DTC there is a description of what may have caused the fault and photographs of any item relevant to the fault, i.e. sensors. There are also diagrams of the wiring where relevant. In addition the system provides the ability to clear individual or all DTCs stored in memory.

Real-time display of information such as voltage, air flow temperature, etc can be displayed in any combination on one of five screens. The information displayed can be chosen from 60 different values, so everything even down to the voltage of the capacitors to fire the injectors can be displayed as a 'single shot' or a continuous readout.

The system will work on any car equipped with the BMW diesel engine fitted with the Bosch DDE4 diesel control unit. Tested on a Land Rover Freelander Td4.
